In this lesson, we learned that Heavenly Father watches over and protects us. We talked about the Wise Men coming to visit Jesus and bringing him gifts, then being warned by an angel not to tell Herod where Jesus was. Then we talked about the flight to Egypt, where Jesus and Mary and Joseph stayed until Herod died and it was safe to return to Israel. The children were happy to hear that the wise men brought presents to Jesus, since they love receiving gifts from their parents and friends and Santa.
We learned that David O. McKay and Hugh B. Brown learned to pray for help and comfort when they were young. We talked about various situations in which it would be helpful to pray. We also brainstormed things that we could thank Heavenly Father for in our prayers, and the children came up with quite a lot of wonderful things!
The children drew self-portraits on circles that said "Heavenly Father Watches Over Me" (file below). We also had a Wise Men coloring page, which I thought was pretty, but most of the class did not like. Reed explained that the Wise Men were "going the wrong way!"--they should have been facing us, like the picture we used in the lesson. Oh, well. He and Sage and Zach enjoyed coloring a picture of children looking at the temple, instead.
