Two of our boys came to class today, so Emi told them everything they had missed about Alma the Younger last week. We talked about how Alma had repented of his sins, and Heavenly Father forgave him. We can also be forgiven of our sins if we repent. We read Isaiah 1:18, which was a little confusing until we found out that that scarlet is a color as well as a girl's name! We learned that we must forgive everybody. We talked how to forgive others, particularly by choosing to be kind and loving instead of angry and spiteful. We talked about Joseph, whose brothers sold him into slavery. The children knew a lot about Joseph because of their scripture movies. We learned that Joseph worked hard and was kind to people no matter what his circumstances were, and that he forgave his brothers and helped them. We discussed ways to forgive others when they do things that upset or hurt us. We colored pictures of Joseph forgiving his brothers, to remind us to forgive others. For some reason, coloring involved scissors and tape as well as crayons today!

Because Thursday is Thanksgiving, we started with Turkey Cookies!!!!! Eight out of eight students loved them, and Sister Combs had decorated them with so much frosting and candy that the children were not too annoyed that they could not have seconds. We talked about forgiving other people who hurt us, intentionally or not. This was also the topic of discussion in Primary, so we reviewed and sorted out the three stories they had heard (Joseph, Nephi, and Jesus Christ forgiving others). We heard a few more stories about children whose classmates and siblings did things that were not nice, and discussed how they should react to the situations. One of the stories was about a girl whose younger brother scribbled with crayon over her carefully drawn masterpiece. The children had many ideas of how to deal with this, including giving the brother a hug, turning over the paper and drawing another picture, making the "revised" art into a box or another kind of artwork, and just telling the brother it was okay.
We learned that we must always forgive others, even if they need forgiving many times. Jesus taught Peter to forgive "until seventy times seven" times, which we decided meant to forgive always. We talked about how it would feel to eat Thanksgiving dinner with somebody that we hadn't forgiven. We would be too busy being angry to feel grateful. We need to forgive others so that we can feel happy and remember our blessings, rather than remembering what somebody did to upset us. We made Thanksgiving Turkeys to help us remember to be grateful and forgiving this week. One of the children observed that it was the first time Sister Combs has brought glue to class all year. . .it may be the last, too! On the other hand, who knows what fun things we will do in the next five weeks? |
