CUPCAKE PAPERS REMAINING

In Relief Society today, we are studying "The Joy of Unselfish Service" by Sister Cristina B. Franco and "Believe, Love, Do" by Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf. Because Sister Franco shared a story about a Primary teacher who made chocolate cake every week, I had to bake chocolate cupcakes for the class! A double batch of our family's buttermilk chocolate cake recipe makes 48 cupcakes, so my four-year-old friend helped me decorate one dozen and took them home to his family, and the remaining three dozen are going to church today.

We had talked about serving others in Sharing Time, so the children had lots to share as we continued the discussion in class. We read Mosiah 2:17 and discussed its meaning. The children took turns telling the parable of the Good Samaritan. We were all excited to arrive at the happy ending of the story! We discussed ways that we can help our families, classmates, and neighbors. We learned about what happens when we serve others from a story about President Monson. The children thought it was really funny that everyone called our prophet Tommy when he was a boy! They also enjoyed imagining him playing baseball with his friends and mowing the lawn. We learned that Tommy's selfless service blessed his neighbor and was a blessing to him as well. We talked about some of the people who help us at church -- our Primary teachers, the music leaders in Sacrament Meeting and Singing Time, and the bishop. We discussed all the hours that these people spend on their callings and the love that they show for us. We also talked about all the things that our families do for us. We made thank you notes to show appreciation for the people who have helped us this week. The children put a lot of thought and effort into their pictures and letters, and were excited to give them to the intended recipients after class!
The Other Sister Combs baked enough oatmeal-chocolate-chip cookies for both her class and ours. This made a lot of children very happy! We learned that, after Jesus taught his Apostles about the Sacrament, he washed their feet. Since they walked all day on dusty ground wearing sandals, their feet were very dirty, and this was a big service. Jesus set an example of showing love and caring for others that we should follow.
We heard a story about Joseph Fielding Smith, who surprised his mother and sister by milking the cow early one morning. It was hard work, but he was happy to help his family. We learned that friends and family are not the only people we should serve. The Thirteenth Article of Faith, which we have been studying in Sharing Time recently, states that we believe in "doing good to all men". We talked about people who help us at school and at church. We made a Chain of Service, to show how service links us together. Each child wrote ways that they can serve others on strips of paper, which we stapled together into a very long chain! It was fun to see how the chain grow as we thought of ways to do good. Many of them suggested simple things, like "Make my bed without being asked," or "Help put away dishes". Ian wrote "Give blood", and Katelynn contributed "Be nice". We learned that some acts of service are big and some are small, but they all help us and those around us to be happy! The children who had extra time before their parents arrived made thank-you notes, to thank people who have given service to them this week. |
