News Flash: Starting next week, our CTR 5 Class is moving to Room 9, and the CTR 4 class will take our former room. Please remember to find us in the new location at the end of church! Now, on to the lesson. . . Sister Combs's nieces and nephew provided the snacks today: chocolate cookies with M&M's on top. We had a long discussion about Noah. The children were very surprised that only Noah's immediate family was willing to come aboard the ark, and that everybody else drowned in the flood. They also wanted to know how the people and the animals found enough to eat during the forty days of rain and 150 days until the earth was dry, and why none of the animals had hurt Noah. We eventually decided that there are some things we just don't know (although it is fun to speculate about animals going into a deep sleep and Noah fishing during the rain storms). We learned that Noah sent a dove three times to look for somewhere safe to live. When the dove did not come back the third time, Noah knew it was time to leave the ark. We learned that he built an altar and thanked Heavenly Father for his family's safety. Heavenly Father promised not to flood the Earth again, and put a rainbow in the sky as a symbol of his promise. We learned that a covenant is a special two-way promise. When we are eight years old, we can be baptized, and enter into the baptismal covenant. We promise to keep the commandments, and in return, Heavenly Father promises to forgive us when we repent, to give us the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and to let us live with Him after this life. We talked about some of the commandments, including prayer, scripture study, tithing, and showing love to others. We also talked about how a covenant only works if both people keep their promises. If we do not keep the commandments, Heavenly Father will not bless us with the things he has promised if we are obedient. We colored pictures of Noah releasing the dove. We added a few rainbow happy face stickers, because we were so happy to learn more about baptism and promises. We also could have colored the picture of the ark and the rainbow, but the children decided one picture was enough and set up an animal matching game instead.

We had two kinds of miniature muffins for snacks today: oatmeal-pumpkin and chocolate-chip. The four children devoured nineteen mini muffins! We discussed how yummy they were and what other flavors we might enjoy on the next Muffin Sunday. We talked about how much we liked receiving presents, and why people give us presents. One of the children mentioned that people gave Jesus presents when he was born. We then talked about the most important present we will ever receive: the Gift of the Holy Ghost. We learned that one may be confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints after baptism (last week's topic). We are confirmed by righteous Melchizedek Priesthood holders. Preston said when he grew up he would have the Priesthood and could do that. Some of the children also talked about their older siblings who had been baptized and confirmed. We talked about who the Holy Ghost is and what he can do for us. The children mentioned that he does not have a body, and that he can tell us what to do. We learned that he can help us to know when things are true and to remember the things that we have been taught, and that he speaks to us with a soft voice or with a feeling in our hearts. The children recognized Jesus and his Apostles in the picture of the Last Supper. We learned that Jesus promised to send a Comforter to help and comfort his disciples. We talked about how the Holy Ghost can comfort us when we are sad or afraid or worried.
We heard a story about a girl named Jan who was worried about moving to a new city. A few of our classmates shared how they had felt when they moved, and what they remembered and missed about their old homes. Jan prayed to feel better about moving, and the Holy Ghost replaced her anxiety with feelings of peace. We also talked about other situations in which the Holy Ghost can comfort us. We recited the First Article of Faith. Most of the children already have it memorized! We finished by coloring pictures of a boy and a girl being confirmed. It was a very chatty, happy sort of Sunday. Sister Lunt taught the class today. The children learned all about Jesus' baptism. . . . . .and what will happen when they are baptized. . . . . .and what they need to do to prepare for baptism. They also ate happy sugar cookies with sprinkles and colored pictures of a boy and a girl being baptized.
Sister Combs would love to share more details about this excellent lesson, but she was not at church to hear it, so please ask your CTR what he or she learned today! |
