These chocolate quinoa protein bites were almost great. The recipe went together quickly, and I finished a canister of chocolate soy powder making them, which felt like an added bonus. Instead of chopped nuts, I added a few miniature chocolate chips, because these things had plenty of protein already. Unfortunately, despite all the other ingredients, the quinoa flavor is still noticeable in these bites, especially in the aftertaste. Most of the bites are in the freezer at the moment, but I might thaw them and roll them in sanding sugar or powdered sugar or organic turbinado sugar and see if that improves the gustatory experience at all. Next time, it's back to the brownie bites recipe, or else I will use this one and substitute oats for the quinoa.

How could I resist trying this recipe? Could have used more specific instructions -- does two graham crackers mean two squares or two sheets (I tried the latter this time, and it came out a bit crumbly, so maybe they meant the former), and how big should the balls be (I guessed and came out with 14 instead of twelve)? I substituted soy powder and butter for the expensive Orgain and almond butter. My milk chocolate chips and starmallows went into the food processor and were briefly pulsed with everything else, for a more homogeneous texture. The result was a bit sweeter than my usual homemade protein snacks (the pumpkin and chocolate ones are my favorites), but still a fairly healthy way to eat graham crackers and chocolate!
Carrot Cake Protein Bars sounded like a good idea, and they were full of good ingredients, but they were inedible. I could not even bring myself to take a picture.
My version of Show Me the Yummy's Protein Brownie Bites is not very photogenic, but it is delicious! I have made them several times, and this is about as good as the pictures get. My changes to the recipe:
Sometimes I wonder why I receive so many e-mails from companies whose products are too expensive to buy. Other times, though, these companies send intriguing recipes, such as these Pumpkin Cookie Dough Protein Bites from Orgain. What could be better than a healthy, spicy, pumpkiny snack? I left out the vanilla extract (because it seemed superfluous with all that vanilla protein powder), used soy powder and soy nut butter instead of Orgain's protein suggestions, used cinnamon and ginger instead of pumpkin pie spice (because we don't keep pre-mixed pumpkin pie spice in the house), and chose not to incorporate the optional mix-ins. The result? Twenty delicious, nutritious treats!
