The children had all eaten a lot on Thanksgiving, but they were not too full to devour chocolate-chip cookies! We talked about what today is: Sunday, or the Sabbath. We discussed things that are good to do on the Sabbath, and the first thing on everybody's list was going to church! We learned that to worship means to show our love and respect for Heavenly Father and Jesus, and that we will be happy and feel the influence of the Holy Ghost if we worship properly. We discussed what to do during the Sacrament, while somebody is giving a prayer, during a lesson, and during singing times. The children had lots of great ideas of what they should and should not do! We learned that singing is a form of worship, and singing a hymn is like saying a prayer. The children enjoyed a story about Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone. When he was a child, his family was too poor to buy shoes. He had to wear old nurse's shoes to go to church, because they were the only thing that fit, and he was almost too embarrassed to leave the house. Elder Featherstone learned that it is more important to go to church than it is to have nice shoes, and he learned that his classmates loved and respected him no matter what was on his feet. The children couldn't imagine not having enough money to buy shoes, but they were very relieved and happy that he made the choice to go to church. We learned from a story about President Kimball that we should listen carefully when we go to church, so that we can learn what Heavenly Father wants us to know and do. As a boy, President Kimball heard a church leader encourage the members to study the scriptures, so he started reading the Bible every night. It took a whole year, but he finished the whole book! The children shared some of the teachings they have learned by coming to church. We colored flip books to help us remember the words to the song "When I Go to Church".

November 21 is traditionally Turkey Cookie Day, so the Sunday afterward is Eat Turkey Cookies in Primary Class Day. Four out of six children liked the gingerbread, five out of six liked the candy corn, and six out of six liked the frosting and crazy candy eyes! Ian said he was keeping his turkey to use as a Thanksgiving decoration, but eventually he became too hungry and ate it. We looked at this picture of Adam and Eve. The children all remembered that Adam and Eve were the first people on Earth. We talked about some of the things that they taught their children, and then discussed what our parents teach us. We learned that it is a commandment to honor our father and mother. The children said this means that they should do what their parents ask them to do and not talk back or be rude. We heard a story about a boy named Annand who followed his father's instructions when he herded goats on a mountainside. The children were glad that he was obedient and safe, but they thought the goats and dog were much more interesting than the rest of the story! We learned that Moroni honored his father by completing the record on the gold plates and then putting them in a safe place. The children remembered talking about Moroni visiting Joseph Smith earlier this year and enjoyed reviewing and learning a little more about him.
Having started the class with turkey cookies, we concluded by making paper turkeys. The children enjoyed choosing different colors of feathers and coloring their birds, and they all gave their new pets silly names! The children were delighted to eat a multitude of mini muffins! They ate an astonishing quantity of both flavors, but at least one child complained about being hungry again before the end of class! We learned about the prophet in this picture. They thought he might be Nephi or Lehi or Mosiah, but then they realized that he was writing in the Book of Mormon because his name is Mormon. We learned that he was pure and righteous even when the people around him were very wicked. The children were grateful to have his good example, and even more grateful that they have friends and family members who choose the right, so that they don't have to be as lonely as Mormon was. The children loved hearing what President Hinckley did when he was in first grade. They plan to continue keeping their language clean. We talked about how there are lots of books and movies and Internet sites that have things that are bad for us to see or hear. The children discussed what to do if somebody wants to show them something that is or might be inappropriate: say no, leave the room, talk to a parent about it, pray about it. They said that the Holy Ghost can help them know if something is bad for them to see or hear or do, and they can turn off the TV or computer or tablet if they have a bad feeling about what they see. They drew and wrote examples of ways to stay pure and righteous, some of which were very surprising. . .Sister Combs knows a lot more about SpongeBob now than she did before class today! We had talked about serving others in Sharing Time, so the children had lots to share as we continued the discussion in class. We read Mosiah 2:17 and discussed its meaning. The children took turns telling the parable of the Good Samaritan. We were all excited to arrive at the happy ending of the story! We discussed ways that we can help our families, classmates, and neighbors. We learned about what happens when we serve others from a story about President Monson. The children thought it was really funny that everyone called our prophet Tommy when he was a boy! They also enjoyed imagining him playing baseball with his friends and mowing the lawn. We learned that Tommy's selfless service blessed his neighbor and was a blessing to him as well. We talked about some of the people who help us at church -- our Primary teachers, the music leaders in Sacrament Meeting and Singing Time, and the bishop. We discussed all the hours that these people spend on their callings and the love that they show for us. We also talked about all the things that our families do for us. We made thank you notes to show appreciation for the people who have helped us this week. The children put a lot of thought and effort into their pictures and letters, and were excited to give them to the intended recipients after class!
