Another recipe from the Wholesome website. I left out the pecans and substituted 1/2 cup butterscotch chips for some of the white chocolate ones, emptying containers of both left over from prior projects. I need to share these with friends and family and collect a few more opinions--I thought they were a bit one-dimensional and cloyingly sweet, but maybe somebody else will like them better. I also followed the baking instructions to the letter and they looked done on top but were gooier than expected inside. So the picture is pretty and it used ingredients that were readily accessible, but I will make something else next time.

Sister Combs forgot to take a picture of the M&M Blondies for the blog, but everybody loved them anyway. As usual, one child asked if we were allowed to have seconds before she tasted the first one, and another child thought we should suspend the two-treat limit so he could have a third. We listened to a song and discussed the proper way to sit or kneel during a prayer. The children all agreed that we need to sit still so that we don't distract others. We close our eyes so that we can concentrate on communicating with Heavenly Father and are not distracted by all the interesting things around us. Our special visitor Emi explained that we bow our heads to show respect for Heavenly Father. We heard an interesting story about Brigham Young and Heber J. Grant. As a boy, Heber would play at the Young house and sometimes join the family for prayer. President Young prayed as if he were speaking to a friend in the same room, and Heber sometimes opened his eyes to look for Heavenly Father. Even though Heber could not see Heavenly Father, he knew that he was listening to President Young's prayers, and he would also listen to Heber's prayers. We talked about the importance of expressing gratitude in our prayers. With the help of Mr. Happy Face, we took turns saying things for which we are thankful. We talked about asking for help in times of need, then learned from a story from the childhood of President Monson. The children were surprised that $5 was a lot of money during the Great Depression, and they loved the happy ending!
We colored pictures to remind us of what we had learned about prayers. The fudge-swirl blondies were a huge success today. Each child ate two, and at least one of them thought he needed a third one! Click here for the recipe, although Sister Combs melted some leftover fudge and swirled it into the batter instead of using any of the mix-ins suggested by the blogger. We learned all about the Jaredites, who were instructed to gather their families and supplies and go on a journey to a promised land. We learned that the Brother of Jared had great faith and followed all of the Lord's commandments. He was instructed to build eight boats for his family and friends to ride in across the ocean. The children read the description of the boats in the book of Ether and then drew their interpretations of Jaredite ships. It was very hard to imagine a boat with no sails and no windows! We learned that Jesus Christ told the Brother of Jared to cut holes in the boats so that the people could have fresh air when the weather was good and be safe when the seas were stormy. Then we talked about how dark a boat with no windows would be. The children suggested that the Jaredites could have used flashlights or lanterns, but these were not available. We learned that the Brother of Jared made sixteen small stones and asked Jesus to touch them with his finger, so that they would illuminate the boats. The Brother of Jared was astonished to see Jesus Christ's finger, because he did not know that Jesus had a spirit body that looked like his physical body. Jesus explained that the Brother of Jared was allowed to see Him because he had such great faith.
We discussed that we will probably not need to be instructed in shipbuilding, but there are situations in which we need to have faith. If we pray and have faith, the Lord will help us with our problems. We concluded with a very easy review quiz. The children enjoyed coloring the wrong answers as much as the correct ones! We had delicious M&M Blondies and a cheerful visitor in class, so it was a great day to be a CTR 5! We reviewed last week's lesson about Lehi taking his family into the wilderness and continued with the next part of the adventure. Heavenly Father told Lehi to send his sons back to Jerusalem to ask Laban for the Brass Plates. Laman and Lemuel did not want to go, but Nephi was obedient and convinced his three brothers (not eight or ten or a hundred, as some of the children thought!) to go with him. We learned that Laman was unsuccesful in acquiring the plates, and ran away from Laban in fear for his life. The brothers picked up gold and silver from their home and brought them to Laban to trade for the plates, but Laban took all of the riches and chased the brothers out of his house. The children were outraged that Laban kept all of the precious things! We learned about Laman and Lemuel beating their brothers Nephi and Sam because they wanted to continue being obedient and trying to get the plates. By now, the children were seriously unimpressed with Laman and Lemuel! We learned that an angel came and told the mean brothers to repent. We learned how Nephi finally acquired the brass plates, and that Zoram was righteous and came back with Nephi and his brothers to their father in the wilderness. The children were probably just as relieved and excited as Nephi's family was that they finally had the brass plates! We talked about how important it is to have the scriptures, so that we can learn and remember what Heavenly Father wants us to do.
We reviewed the sequence of events with a coloring activity. Everyone in our class came today, plus we had a visitor! Fortunately, everybody loved the Multiple Chocolate Blondies. These snacks took a lot of chewing, so we had plenty of time to discuss the difference between brownies and blondies, how fun it is to visit grandma (or have her visit us), and various other important topics. We talked about what we would do if we were hurt--we would find Mom and ask her to put a band-aid on our cut or scrape. Then we talked about what to do if our spirit is hurting because we made a wrong choice--we should repent. We heard a story about a boy named Ricardo who took a piece of candy from the store without paying for it. Everybody was horrified. You should never steal!!! We learned what Ricardo did to repent:
We finished by coloring Repentance Umbrellas to help us remember the steps we need to take to repent. A few water droplet and happy face stickers on top made the umbrellas extra exciting. Repentance helps us to be happy! |
