I stayed home to sleep off an antibiotic-induced haze, and Brooklynn's Mom taught the class. Thank goodness for friends who can give a fantastic lesson on short notice!
In further February festivity, we started this class by eating delicious heart-shaped sugar cookies!
The lesson was about the importance of families. The children brought pictures to show each other, and we discussed how each family had different people in it, but they all loved and helped each other. We talked about the angel Gabriel telling Mary that she would be Jesus's mother, and then Joseph seeing an angel in a dream and learning about his role as Jesus's stepfather. The children were familiar with a lot of this story, but they didn't recognize the angel in the picture of the Annunciation--they thought he was Joseph, or Jesus, or Heavenly Father. It was interesting to learn that angels look a lot like everybody else. The children were glad to know that Jesus had parents to teach and protect him, just like they do. Our coloring activity was some cute little heart animals! As usual, we had several different coloring styles, and, as usual, a few of the girls wanted to stay and finish their artwork when Mom was ready to leave! No treats this week, because it was Fast Sunday. This led to a chorus of, "I'm so hungry!" and "Didn't we just have that day??" and "My mom let me have snacks earlier today!" Ah, the hardships of childhood.
The lesson was about making good choices, so we started out by choosing from a selection of differently-patterned pencils. We reviewed Heavenly Father's plan for us and that Satan wanted to force us to do the right thing. Everyone agreed that a life without choices would be really boring and no fun at all. We learned that agency is a big word for the ability to make our own choices. The children already knew that making good choices leads to happiness, so much of the lesson material and activities were review. We learned from Matthew 21:14-16 about a time when Jesus was in the temple. The children enjoyed learning that Jesus had a temple just like we do, but they were very surprised that the high priests disliked him so much. We talked about following Jesus and praising him just like the children in the Bible did. We sang what has become our class song, Choose the Right Way, then learned another one, Listen, Listen. We talked about how the Holy Ghost helps us to make good choices. Our coloring sheet was a page full of hearts, just because you can never color too many hearts, especially in February! It is always fun to see the children's creativity and how many different ways they come up with to color the same picture. |
