We loved coloring treasure boxes and other items to review what we learned in class today!
Today was almost a very sad day in our little class. It was Fast Sunday, so Sister Combs had not brought snacks, but the Primary President had saved cookies from an event earlier in the week, so nobody starved to death. It was also Sister Combs's last Sunday as a CTR (she is moving to a Sunday School class several years older), but the children seemed blissfully unaware of the fact, so we continued class as usual and left it for mom and dad to explain matters to them at home. We talked about some of our very special treasures, such as piggy banks, stuffed animals, and toy trucks. Everybody could think of a treasure and what made it so important and valuable. Then we took turns pulling objects from our treasure box: a photograph of the Houston Temple, the scriptures, and pictures of Jesus. We talked how all of these treasures teach us what Heavenly Father wants us to do and help us to be happy. We learned that many people came to learn from Jesus when he lived on the earth. No matter how tired he was, he always found time to teach them. Jesus wants everyone to know the truth. We reviewed some of our favorite stories from the life of Jesus Christ. We learned that prophets teach us what Jesus wants us to know. We talked a little about Joseph Smith, and how he studied the scriptures and prayed to know which church was true. He had a vision and learned that none of the churches then on the earth were correct. Later, Jesus sent angels to help Joseph Smith restore the true church on the earth and become a latter-day prophet. We always love talking about our current prophet, President Thomas S. Monson! He has many great stories that teach us how we should live and treat others.

Sister Combs forgot to take a picture of the M&M Blondies for the blog, but everybody loved them anyway. As usual, one child asked if we were allowed to have seconds before she tasted the first one, and another child thought we should suspend the two-treat limit so he could have a third. We listened to a song and discussed the proper way to sit or kneel during a prayer. The children all agreed that we need to sit still so that we don't distract others. We close our eyes so that we can concentrate on communicating with Heavenly Father and are not distracted by all the interesting things around us. Our special visitor Emi explained that we bow our heads to show respect for Heavenly Father. We heard an interesting story about Brigham Young and Heber J. Grant. As a boy, Heber would play at the Young house and sometimes join the family for prayer. President Young prayed as if he were speaking to a friend in the same room, and Heber sometimes opened his eyes to look for Heavenly Father. Even though Heber could not see Heavenly Father, he knew that he was listening to President Young's prayers, and he would also listen to Heber's prayers. We talked about the importance of expressing gratitude in our prayers. With the help of Mr. Happy Face, we took turns saying things for which we are thankful. We talked about asking for help in times of need, then learned from a story from the childhood of President Monson. The children were surprised that $5 was a lot of money during the Great Depression, and they loved the happy ending!
We colored pictures to remind us of what we had learned about prayers. We had talked about serving others in Sharing Time, so the children had lots to share as we continued the discussion in class. We read Mosiah 2:17 and discussed its meaning. The children took turns telling the parable of the Good Samaritan. We were all excited to arrive at the happy ending of the story! We discussed ways that we can help our families, classmates, and neighbors. We learned about what happens when we serve others from a story about President Monson. The children thought it was really funny that everyone called our prophet Tommy when he was a boy! They also enjoyed imagining him playing baseball with his friends and mowing the lawn. We learned that Tommy's selfless service blessed his neighbor and was a blessing to him as well. We talked about some of the people who help us at church -- our Primary teachers, the music leaders in Sacrament Meeting and Singing Time, and the bishop. We discussed all the hours that these people spend on their callings and the love that they show for us. We also talked about all the things that our families do for us. We made thank you notes to show appreciation for the people who have helped us this week. The children put a lot of thought and effort into their pictures and letters, and were excited to give them to the intended recipients after class!
Following our snack of sandwich cookies (vanilla with fudge filling), we listened to several stories in which people had listened to the promptings of the Holy Ghost. We learned about Karolina, whose brother's foot was trapped between railroad ties. Karolina prayed for help, and the Holy Ghost told her to loosen Erik's shoelaces. She untied the shoe and was able to pull her brother's foot out before the train came. We learned about a boy named George, who loved soccer, as do the children in our class. The Holy Ghost helped him to remember that going to church was more important than watching a championship game. The boys enjoyed a story about Bruce R. McConkie riding a horse. He was saved from a very bad fall because his father heeded a prompting from the Holy Ghost. Our favorite story was about President Monson, when he was still Elder Monson. He visited children in Samoa and felt inspired to shake hands with each of them. He looked at the group of over two hundred children and did not think he had enough time, but the Holy Ghost kept putting the thought in his mind. When he asked the Primary leader if he could shake everyone's hand, the teacher was very excited! The children had all prayed that Elder Monson would come to visit them and shake their hands. Heavenly Father had answered their prayers. We colored horses to remind us about Elder McConkie. . . . . .and trains so that we could remember the story about Karolina and Erik.
