We learned about what happens when we serve others from a story about President Monson. The children thought it was really funny that everyone called our prophet Tommy when he was a boy! They also enjoyed imagining him playing baseball with his friends and mowing the lawn. We learned that Tommy's selfless service blessed his neighbor and was a blessing to him as well.
We had talked about serving others in Sharing Time, so the children had lots to share as we continued the discussion in class. We read Mosiah 2:17 and discussed its meaning. The children took turns telling the parable of the Good Samaritan. We were all excited to arrive at the happy ending of the story! We discussed ways that we can help our families, classmates, and neighbors. We learned about what happens when we serve others from a story about President Monson. We learned that Tommy's selfless service blessed his neighbor and was a blessing to him as well. We talked about some of the people who help us at church -- our Primary teachers, the music leaders in Sacrament Meeting and Singing Time, and the bishop. We discussed all the hours that these people spend on their callings and the love that they show for us. We also talked about all the things that our families do for us. We made thank you notes to show appreciation for the people who have helped us this week. The children put a lot of thought and effort into their pictures and letters, and were excited to give them to the intended recipients after class!

August is a complicated month: today was No Treat Sunday (also known as Fast Sunday) and next Sunday is No Primary Sunday (alias Stake Conference).
We looked at a map of the Holy Land and talked about some of the places that Jesus went and knew about when he lived on the Earth. We learned that the Jews and the Samaritans lived near each other, but did not like each other. Then we took turns acting out the Parable of the Good Samaritan. This was fun, except that everyone really wanted to be the traveler who was attacked by thieves, so all of the other roles became consolation prizes. Even though the priest and the Levite knew what the right choice was, only the Good Samaritan chose to be kind and take care of the wounded man. We talked about being kind even when it is not easy, illustrated by a story about a little girl sharing a snack with a boy who was mean to her. We learned that if we love one another, we are Jesus' disciples. We sang the hymn "Love One Another". . .or at least Sister Combs sang it, with occasional help. We colored pictures of the key elements of the Parable of the Good Samaritan, so the children can share the story with their families. Those who had extra time drew other pictures and added smiley face stickers, because when we are kind to others, it makes everyone happy! |
