We loved coloring treasure boxes and other items to review what we learned in class today!
Today was almost a very sad day in our little class. It was Fast Sunday, so Sister Combs had not brought snacks, but the Primary President had saved cookies from an event earlier in the week, so nobody starved to death. It was also Sister Combs's last Sunday as a CTR (she is moving to a Sunday School class several years older), but the children seemed blissfully unaware of the fact, so we continued class as usual and left it for mom and dad to explain matters to them at home. We talked about some of our very special treasures, such as piggy banks, stuffed animals, and toy trucks. Everybody could think of a treasure and what made it so important and valuable. Then we took turns pulling objects from our treasure box: a photograph of the Houston Temple, the scriptures, and pictures of Jesus. We talked how all of these treasures teach us what Heavenly Father wants us to do and help us to be happy. We learned that many people came to learn from Jesus when he lived on the earth. No matter how tired he was, he always found time to teach them. Jesus wants everyone to know the truth. We reviewed some of our favorite stories from the life of Jesus Christ. We learned that prophets teach us what Jesus wants us to know. We talked a little about Joseph Smith, and how he studied the scriptures and prayed to know which church was true. He had a vision and learned that none of the churches then on the earth were correct. Later, Jesus sent angels to help Joseph Smith restore the true church on the earth and become a latter-day prophet. We always love talking about our current prophet, President Thomas S. Monson! He has many great stories that teach us how we should live and treat others.

News Flash Part 2: The other class decided that they did not need to trade classrooms with us after all, so we are staying in Room 12 until further notice! We started our lesson discussing what we would need to do if we had a new puppy. The children said they would feed him, take him for walks, give him water, and snuggle with him. Then we talked about what might make a puppy feel sick. Bennett mentioned that chocolate was bad for his dog, so feeding a puppy the wrong food would make him sick. Just like a puppy, a person needs to eat the right things to be healthy. We learned that Heavenly Father wants us to be healthy, so he taught the Prophet Joseph Smith about things are good for our bodies and things that are bad for our bodies. We learned that these teachings are found in Section 89 of the Doctrine and Covenants. We put a happy face on one side of the classroom, to represent things that are good for our bodies, and a sad face on the other side, for things that are not good. The children took turns selecting a picture of a food or drink and put them near the correct face. They had a lot of fun and made all the right choices! We now know that fruits, vegetables, grains, cheeses, and a little meat are all good for our bodies, and that we should never drink wine, beer, coffee, or tea, or smoke cigarettes. The children also chose to put soda and chips in the Do Not Eat category. We learned about the good example set by Daniel. The king chose Daniel and some other Israelite young men to receive special training. To help them become big and strong, the king wanted the young men to eat a lot of meat and wine. Daniel knew that this was not healthy, so he refused to eat this food, and asked for pulse and water instead. The king's servant was nervous about disobeying the king, but agreed to let Daniel and his friends eat their diet for ten days. At the end of the ten days, Daniel and his friends were healthier and smarter and stronger than all of the people who were eating the king's food. We learned that we will also be blessed if we follow Heavenly Father's instructions of what to eat that are found in the Word of Wisdom. We concluded by drawing pictures of healthy foods on dinner plates. The children enjoyed drawing lots of fruits and vegetables, pasta, rice, and brownies. CTR class is always better with food, even on Fast Sunday!
We started with a review of last week's lesson. The children remembered that Joseph Smith lived in a log cabin with wood floors, that he learned at home until they moved close to a school, and that he lived in a big family that "grew food in their garden to eat" and "grew plants that they made into wool for clothes". We learned that there were many religions when Joseph Smith was growing up. One of the children pointed out that this is still true in our day. Joseph was very confused about which church he should join, since they all had different teachings, and he did not know which one was right. He read James 1:5, and decided to pray to find out which church to join. We watched the middle part of The Restoration to find out what happened when he prayed, although everyone seemed to know already! We talked about all the things that Joseph Smith learned from the First Vision:
We finished by coloring Love Robots to remind us to show love to our families! The children discussed current events while eating chocolate-chip cookies. Bennett's big brother just turned 16, Vanessa is about to move, and Emi had a story to tell, but Preston said, "Nothing happened to me this week!" He was pretty excited about cookies, though! We read many interesting facts about a person and tried to guess who he was. This person had brown hair, a wife named Emma, a mother named Lucy, liked to laugh and play games. . .finally, when we read that he was a prophet, we realized that he was Joseph Smith. We talked about how different it would be to grow up in a log cabin on a farm instead of where we live now. It would be hard work to plant crops and take care of the farm animals, and we would miss having electricity and central heating. The children thought it would be fun to have a fire in the fireplace all winter, though, because then we could roast marshmallows every day. We learned that Joseph Smith had a lot of brothers and sisters, and that his family was not rich, but happy. We learned that they were happy because they followed Jesus Christ's teachings. We discussed examples of the Smith Family showing love, serving one another, obeying their parents, praying, and reading the scriptures. The children shared how they apply these principles in their families. We agreed that our families are happy when we do the same good things that Joseph Smith's family did.
Because we had talked about love, we ended the class by coloring heart animals. The animals will help us remember to show love to our families this week! |
